Forced by tragedy to join the crew of the Perdido Star, a sailing ship, in 1805, young Jack O'Reilly experiences his coming of age on the high seas and in the ports of Cuba, Salem, and the South Seas. Reprint.
From the Author: I'm forever fascinated by the emerald atolls and lagoons of Micronesia. The allure of the islands and the people is what drew me in. But the submerged history of shipwrecks and fabled battles is what keeps me hooked. I tried to capture this sunken vitality in my novel Wake of the Perdido Star, written with my friend Daniel Lenihan, an underwater archeologist. The characters we created dived into these waters to retrieve guns and salvage instruments on a wrecked ship--actions based loosely on a historical event in Palau in 1783, when a British East India Company craft sank. With help from the natives, the survivors built a new ship and sailed back to England. (Gene Hackman, in National Geographic Traveler, November 1999)
