Thoreau / 1854 / Walden; or, Life in the Woods (Safe 8, 104061) Octavo. Original publisher's brown blindstamped cloth, spine title stamped in gilt (still quite bright). Pale yellow coated endpapers. Hinges and joints perfect. Not cocked. Spine ends very slightly frayed and unrestored. Corners with a touch of rubbing, still quite sharp and not bumped and with only a tiny bit of fraying just starting. Covers very nice, with a few negligible faded old whitish spots just discernable on front cover. Old ink inscription on front free endpaper: "Presented to Grace Caroline Kimball, Bought from Aunt Franks, May 1st. 1905. By Her Mother." Internally very clean and nice. One gathering near middle of the book ever so slightly sprung (but still solidly attached to book block). An extremely nice very good example in unrestored original publisher's binding. Housed in a custom half brown morocco and cloth slipcase, with cloth chemise. [1]-357, [5 blank] pages. 8 pp. of publisher's ads at rear dated April 1854 (tipped in between rear free endpaper and rear pastedown, as issued). Title vignette of Thoreau's cabin. Lithograph map "Walden Pond. A Reduced Plan. 1846" with "S.W. Chandler Bro." imprint, facing page 307. A Very Nice Example of Walden A very solid and clean example of the first edition, first printing of this classic of American literature, with the earliest dated publisher's ads (April 1854) and the map of Walden Pond bearing the faint Chandler imprint.
