If You Walk Down This Road

Lizard's log, Fox's den, and other animal homes are discovered on a walk down the road

PreSchool-K-- The friendly forest folk in Shady Green are understandably curious about the newcomers walking down the road, stopping in at every home. Grandmommy Cottontail lives on the hill, the Lizard family in the log, Ma and Pa Squirrel and their young ones frisk in their tree, and, at the far end of the town where no one lives, there's the perfect home for Mouse and child. Each of the neighbors comes bearing home-warming gifts. The text is in brief rhythmic questions and replies: "Who has a house with a view of the sky? Old Brown Owl has a view of the sky." Soft watercolor illustrations burst with humorous detail and activity totally appropriate to the homes and residents. Bug's Buggies Used Mobile Homes sells shells on wheels to homeless (though clothed) snails; Mole's walls are hung with picks and shovels; the squirrel kids have several games underway using nuts for balls. Illustrations demand multiple readings and the gentle, welcoming story will linger with the picture-book crowd. --Virginia Opocensky, formerly at Lincoln City Libraries, NE
