Walks Without a Soul

Hunting down the Comanche raiders who killed his infant daughter and kidnapped his remaining family members, Nate Wagoner journeys through a hostile land where he obtains the name, "Walks Without a Soul." Reprint.

Though slaves in antebellum Texas, Nate Wagoner and his family eke out a living sharecropping 25 acres of hardscrabble land. Comanches raid the area, taking captive several women, including Nate's wife and two older daughters. Nate is allowed to join the rescue efforts. As a slave, he is made to crawl by the white men he helps. But to the Comanches, who only have a place in their world for men who are white, brown, or red, he is a nonentity, a being who "walks without a soul." As a result, he can go freely among the Comanches, and for the first time in his life, his skin color does not hinder him. In his year-long search for his family, Nate travels where no white man would dare. Proctor's simple tale is well researched, well paced, and compelling reading. Highly recommended to all public libraries.
