"Walkshaping," a concept developed by walk-clinic specialist Yanker, uses walking as its core activity while also recommending calisthenics and body-building. The end product: a total-body workout involving all 10 major muscle groups. With a choice of workouts gentle on the back and joints, and ranging in time increments from 12 to 60 minutes, Yanker provides routines that tone and strengthen muscles. The exercises, suitable indoors or outdoors, reflect a balanced approach to body development and fitness. Yanker claims that a six-week course can result in a reduction of between one and 10 pounds of body fat and a loss of between one and five inches of fat on the waist, hips and thighs. He suggests that readers photograph themselves before beginning the program and compare the old with new photographs taken at the end of six, eight and 12 weeks. Walkshaping may well be an excellent fitness choice for readers who feel skittish about vigorous exercise routines or about classes at the gym. Photos not seen by PW.

Walking, powerwalking, and racewalking remain popular with exercisers, and if Yanker has his way, walkshaping will be the next exercise boom. The benefits of walkshaping are increased cardiovascular fitness, firmer muscle tone, and weight loss of two to ten pounds during a six-week period. In this guide, Yanker introduces the basic techniques of the walkshaping program. Walkers are advised to keep a steady pace while synchronizing arm, leg, and torso movements, which involve the use of weights and other resistance devices. This easy-to-follow guide offering clear, step-by-step directions will include 150 black-and-white photographs. Sue-Ellen Beauregard
