The issue of LIFE includingthe Sony advertisement from which Berman détourned a photograph ofa hand holding a compact transistor radio. Berman is best known for his series of Verifax collages made using an appropriated advertisement for Sony published in this June 12, 1964 issue of LIFE magazine one of the most widely read publications in mid-century America. The quintessential image of a handheld transistor radio became Berman s signature motif. Using a Verifax machine, a proto-photocopier, he superimposed a wide range of found images onto the radio s rectangular front panel, which he often repeated in grids of anywhere from four to fifty-six. Combining several forms of mass communication radio, magazine, photocopy these serial images speak to Berman s interest in the transmission of popular culture. Offset.
