Wallops

Wallops by Harry R. Durant. Wallops is a 1907 collection of boxing stories that transports readers into the world of prizefighting along the American East Coast and New York's ringside culture. Durant offers a sequence of dramatic episodes featuring mysterious fighters, cunning managers, backroom deals, and intense bouts, exploring themes of ambition, loyalty, and the moral costs of sport. The stories—such as The Unknown, The Double Cross, A Quitter, Buffalo, The Champion Goes Home, Red Kelly's Revolution, A Sucker, How Moriarty Escaped, When Campbell Cried—blend action with character portraits, romance, and social texture of the era. They depict training camps, backstage intrigues, and the psychology of crowds, while showing both heroism and exploitation in the prize ring. The collection captures early 20th-century urban life and the brutal romance of boxing, offering entertainment and sharp social observation.
