Trade paperback. 249 pages. Bibliography, Index. Re-issue of the title first published in 1951, first printing thus. "But for the opera, I could never have written Leaves of Grass,” said Whitman later in life. Even if the quote were apocryphal, the poets' fascination with music and opera in his early life would lend credence to its veracity. No previous ownership marks. A clean, fresh, unmarked and unread copy. Like new.

Review
“There is excitement even in Professor Faner’s scholarship: the excitement of young Whitman as he went from opera to opera and from concert to concert, as he began to understand the full beauty, first of the human voice and, later, of the orchestra, and the excitement of observing how all this comes back into his poetry, as subject-matter, as words written with the capabilities of the voice always in mind, as construction. There is, too, much information on other things than Whitman’s art in Walt Whitman and Opera, so that it is a source-book for the history of music in America during the middle years of the nineteenth century.” —Times Literary Supplement
