Walter Benn, and How He Stepped Out of the Gutter

"Walter Benn, And How He Stepped Out Of The Gutter" by Grace Stebbing. This is a Victorian moral tale about a sickly, impoverished boy who begins life in a northern factory town. After his mother dies, he endures poverty, hunger, and ridicule, but a chance sixpence from a kindly neighbour and the help of an old cobbler named Bill set him on a path toward self-help. He learns cobbling, and attends evening classes taught by Mr. Danvers and supported by Mr. Hare, reading about science, mathematics, and the stars. Despite taunts and near-destitution, he perseveres, aided by a growing circle of friends, including Stilman, who stand with him through hardship. A false accusation of theft tests his integrity, but the truth is uncovered by an upright foreman and his allies. Benn ultimately receives generous support to pursue education and a career, and the narrative closes with his success and a reminder of the value of faith, patience, and diligent study as the means to rise above poverty.
