First Printing of the 1975 Farrar, Straus and Giroux edition, featuring Oliver and Gunnvor Stallybrass's acclaimed retranslation of Under the Autumn Star (1906) and On Muted Strings (1909). Part of the Noonday Press line, this edition reflects the mid-century revival of Hamsun in English, driven by interest in his psychologically interior, early-modernist prose. Designed by Marion Hess and published simultaneously in the United States and Canada, the volume presents Hamsun's mature style - lyrical, ironic, and introspective - with clarity and fidelity to the original Norwegian. The book is in Very Good condition: gently toned wraps with light edge wear, a few small surface rubs to the front panel, and a faint crease to the upper corner. Interior pages are clean, unmarked, and well-preserved, aside from a small vintage Mobile Assistance Patrol card once laid in. Binding is square and tight, with no reader's lean. Spine is only moderately creased, uncommon for a 1970s trade paperback of this length. This is the true First Printing, as confirmed by the copyright page, which states: 'First printing, 1975.' Published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux and distributed as Noonday 530, priced at $3.95. Library of Congress classification: PT8950.H3. The translation reproduces Hamsun's tonal shifts - melancholy, wry humor, and interior monologue - with greater textual accuracy than earlier English versions. Contents include both novels complete: Under the Autumn Star (pp. 3-114) and On Muted Strings (pp. 115-218). Knut Hamsun (1859-1952), recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature (1920), remains one of the most influential figures of psychological and modernist fiction. His narrative innovations including fragmentation, interiority, impressionism shaped authors ranging from Thomas Mann and Stefan Zweig to Ernest Hemingway and Isaac Bashevis Singer.…
