Wanderings by the Loire

Wanderings By The Loire by Leitch Ritchie is a nineteenth-century travelogue in which an English narrator journeys along the Loire, from Paris toward Orléans, Blois, Tours, and on to Nantes and Saumur, interleaving vivid landscape description with historical anecdotes, portraits of French manners, and observations on architecture and religion. The work blends travel narrative with romantic and antiquarian digressions, as the narrator visits key towns and monuments—Orléans, Amboise, Blois, Tours, Saumur, and Nantes—commenting on levées, bridges, châteaux, cathedrals, and street life, while weaving in legends and historical notes from French history. Turner engravings accompany the text, illustrating the river’s scenery and monuments. The chapters progress through episodes such as The Patache, The Garden of France, The Subterraneans, The Unknown, The Pirate Of The Loire, and Blue-Beard, culminating in a rich, panoramic portrait of a European river and the cultures it sustains in the early 19th century.
