I Want a Leopard Gecko
Crimson Hill Books — Fun books for curious kids
Is a leopard gecko the perfect first pet?
Leopard geckos, sometimes called “leos,” are gentle, quiet, easy to handle, and incredibly fun to watch. They’re one of the best beginner reptiles for kids because they’re hardy, clean, and don’t need constant attention. If your child is asking for a pet lizard, a leo might be the ideal choice.
Written for young readers in grades 3–4, I Want a Leopard Gecko is a clear, friendly, step-by-step guide that helps kids understand what it’s really like to have a leopard gecko and how to care for one responsibly.
Inside this fun and practical chapter book, kids will learn:
✔ Where to find and adopt a healthy leopard gecko
✔ How to set up the perfect gecko habitat (warm and cool zones, hides, substrate, lighting, and more)
✔ What leopard geckos eat and how to feed them safely
✔ How to handle and interact with their new pet gently and confidently
✔ The basic care routines that keep leos healthy and happy
✔ Fun facts about gecko behavior, colors, and personality
Designed for beginning pet owners, this book blends fun animal facts with simple, practical guidance so kids get both excitement and responsibility. With color photos and easy explanations, young readers gain the confidence they need to enjoy their gecko while caring for it safely.
I Want a Leopard Gecko

About the Author
Jacquelyn Elnor Johnson is a former teacher and journalist and is the author of more than 20 books for children and adults including the Best Pets For Kids series.
She says: "Today, more than ever, we need ways to connect kids to our natural world. Learning about pets and other animals is a way to do this.
"Having a pet can draw out a shy child, calm a nervous child, befriend an unpopular child, support a disabled child and enliven the life of any child.
"Pets and kids belong together. They help each other learn, see, understand and grow in mind, body and spirit.
"Good pets - and good kids - don't simply 'happen,' as any parent or teacher can tell you. I have been or am both teacher and parent as well as a lifetime pet lover and pet owner.
"Kids and pets need the opportunity to learn and grow together.
"I'm proud to introduce you to our Best Pets For Kids Series of books about pets and their related wild animal cousins. All our books are grounded in the belief that all living creatures matter. All need to be cared for and protected.
"These books are a fun read for preteen readers to expand their understanding and their horizons, while helping them become better readers and world-citizens."
When not writing, Jacquelyn loves travel, gardening, fostering rescue shelter pets and watching TV documentaries. She lives in Nova Scotia, Canada.
Tristan Pulsifer, age 9, is co-author of four of the books in the Best Pets For Kids series.
He's a kid who loves pets, which is good because his family has more pets than people including dogs, a cat and lizards!
A grade 4 student, he enjoys writing about pets with his friend Jacquelyn. His favorite pet is Gizmo, a leopard gecko.
When not reading about pets and writing about them or at school, Tristan enjoys working on his skateboard tricks, taking classes in self defense and helping his younger sister learn to read. He lives in Nova Scotia, Canada.
