About this Item
Original black printed green cloth wraps 13x18cm. ix, 37pp including 5 b/w figures + (2)pp b/w photos. Very good with the ink stamp of Major J.A. Robertson, CD, to the front wrap and title page, and his name written at an earlier date to the front as "Cpl Roberston, J.A. - 23 Mar 1961", and numbers and ink stamp to the lower wrap. This self-contained manual was the first and apparently only Part published in a series intended to include Jungle Warfare (II), Mountain Warfare (III), and Warfare in Snow and Ice (IV). Noting that "the majority of the army is drawn from town dwellers", they were intended to supplement two manuals (The Infantry Division in Battle, and The Armoured Division in Battle) "to show how conditions affect the application of principles and require special methods" (Introduction). This draws on experiences in the North African Campaign, and distinguishes between conditions in North Africa, Arabia, Iraq, and Pakistan. Chapters cover desert conditions, organisation and administration, tactical handling, advance, attack, pursuit, defence, and withdrawal. Appendices include notes for drivers, flag signals in the event of lack of wireless communication, and passage through a minefield. Figures show a battalion group in open formation, armoured regimental group moving in open formation, regimental group in harbour, covering force in depth, and traffic control for move forward of armoured division at El Alamein. The photos show dust, sand, water, grit, bog, heat, stones, and mud.
