The Watchers

Daniel Mercer does not remember choosing the road. He only knows it will not let him leave.

The highway stretches through isolated country beneath a black sky. The silence inside Daniel's truck is too complete. Distance refuses to behave. Then the same marker appears again.

MILE 17.

No turn. No exit. No way back.

As the road repeats, time slips out of order and Daniel's reflection stops following him correctly. First it moves late. Then without him. Then before him.

Something beyond the glass is watching-something patient enough to learn his face, his movements, and the smallest space between intention and action.

Daniel keeps driving because stopping no longer feels safer. The truck still runs. The road still opens ahead. But mile by mile, he becomes less certain that he is the one guiding it-or that the thing wearing his reflection plans to let him remain behind the wheel.
