In addition to these estimates of water requirements of crops by pot-culture methods, it occurred to me some four years ago to try to make observations in the field on the same subject.

It is generally acknowledged that results obtained by pot cultures should be, when possible, verified by similar experiments in the field, and however great the difficulty in estimating the water requirements of crops in this way, it was evident that if the pot-culture estimate could be even approximately checked, such confirmation would possess considerable value.
