About the Author

Theodor Fontane (1819-98) became accepted in the 20th century as Germany's finest realist novelist. He is the author of 17 novels and novellas including 'Effi Briest' (also translated by Hugh Rorrison and Helen Chambers; now published in Penguin Classics), 'Cecile' (Angel Classics), and 'On Tangled Paths' (Angel Classics).
