Synopsis:

A photographic tour of homelessness in America focuses on the plight of the dispossessed, with contributions from Mary Ellen Mark, Jodi Cobb, Betsy Frampton, Donna Ferrato, Callie Shell, Eli Reed, Diana Walker, and other celebrated photographers.

Reviews: This book of photographs concerning the plight of America's homeless is the companion document to a traveling photographic exhibit of the same name that opened in December 1999 at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and will tour the United States in 2000. The cocurators, Philip Brookman and Jane Slate Siena, invited 13 photographers, including Diana Walker, Tipper Gore (who wrote the introduction to the book), Clarence Williams, and Annie Leibovitz, to photograph U.S. homeless citizens and noncitizens and document their struggles to find places to call their own. The book aims to announce that homelessness need not be a permanent part of the American landscape and that the complex problem of homelessness is not insurmountable. However, the photographs do not especially confirm this philosophy, as the devastation and despair portrayed greatly overwhelms any joy. Also, the variety of artistic styles gives the book a jerky, disjointed dimension that interrupts the flow of the major theme. Yet the book succeeds in making the public aware that homelessness is more than just another election-year topic. Proceeds from the sale of this book benefit the National Alliance to End Homelessness. Recommended for public libraries.
