The Way to Pancho's Kitchen: A Trail Guide for Small School Leaders

This book distills decades of experience in imagining, building, accrediting, evaluating, advising, leading, and sustaining small-scale organizations that last—shaped by insights from a global network of teachers, leaders, and innovators, some of the most brilliant people I’ve known and studied, who have turned hard-earned experience into durable organizational wisdom. Some of the lessons arise on campuses of all sorts. Others are drawn from fieldwork, Indigenous communities, mountain trails, riverbeds, and the quiet reckonings of those working far from the spotlight.

These pages are filled with field-tested lessons—parables and, at moments, requiems—of what becomes possible when we choose connection over compliance, openness over control, and courage over convention, sometimes at real risk. Read and return to them, build from them. Take this book in your backpack, get it wet and dirty, scrawl your notes in the margins. Create your own.

You are not alone in searching for something different, something more grounded and personally meaningful. You have chosen perhaps the most purposeful, impactful profession and heritage in all of history. You’re here because you were cut out for this work. This book is for the leaders and followers of a quiet revolution--those advancing a new era of school entrepreneurship and connection. The lessons are for those trying to find something essential and original in education, and to sustain it for life. This is an invitation to rediscover what we knew about teaching and leading all along, to create the space for it, and to reclaim the roots of education that connect us to one another and to the natural world. If that's you, this book will not just remind you why this work matters. THE WAY TO PACNHO'S KITCHEN will affirm why you were called to this work in the first place--and point to some things to come, patterns in formation. To success, whatever that means for you.
