Revised octavo edition preface dated 1849. Two volumes with a Sketch of the Origin and Progress of the Art of Writing, by Henry Noel Humphreys and a Treatise on Shorthand or Stenography by Isaac Pitman. Half leather. 613 pages and 540 pages plus The Art of Writing 111 pages plus Treatise on Shorthand 11 pages plus plates. 5 raised bands, gilt titles and gilt tooled decoration to spines. Slight loss to top of spine to vol 2, small split to top of spine vol1. General wear to extremities, slight foxing mainly to prelim's/ endpapers. Internally very good indeed with tight bindings. One of the prelim's has been used as a record of births/ marriages of the Lunn at Birkhouse Cumberworth family last entry 1874. No extra postage in UK for heavy set. Marbled end papers and edges of text blocks. Considerable wear to covers, particularly along the leather edges. Some scattered foxing.
