In his comprehensive survey of the medically accepted and scientifically proven facts of weight control, Lamb (a syndicated columnist and medical consultant to the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports) explains the physiology of human hunger, eating habits, nutrition, calorie utilization, metabolism and fat formation, showing how our minds and behavior patterns in these matters often override the far healthier decisions of our physiological regulators. While it is easy enough, as Lamb observes, to lose weight through fasting, fad diets and various funky schemes, in doing so we tend to upset our nutritional balance. The author counters such hazardous practices by telling us how to "reduce girth control" safely. Unfortunately, the book's title, in its wily play on words, errs in choosing "game" to describe itself. On the whole, the volume offers a serious and scholarly assessment of its subject, coupled with sagacious advice. Physicians, nurses, health and sports counselors, dieticians and the general public will benefit.
