Octavo, pp. [1-6] 7 [8] 9 [10] 11-182 [183-188: blank] [note: first two leaves and last two leaves used as front and rear paste-downs and free endpapers], publisher's gray boards, front and spine panels stamped in black. First edition. "The first half of the book, written by Phillips, is an informal nonfictional survey of the sub-genre of war-related tales of the supernatural, a topic that became popular with the runaway success of Arthur Machen's 'The Bowmen' in 1914, which readers took as reportage, latching onto it as moral-boosting proof that their combatants in the Great War were on the side of the angels. The second half of the present volume consists of five short stories by Hopkins, illustrative of this sub-genre. The introduction makes mention of Machen's story; WAR AND THE WEIRD is probably best taken in the spirit of a footnote to that story and its surrounding nimbus of mystical patriotism (or patriotic mysticism)" (Robert Eldridge). Reginald 07395. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978). Boards worn at spine ends, edges rubbed, spine panel darkened, pulp paper text block darkened, but not brittle, a sound, good copy of an uncommon, cheaply made wartime book. (#173685).
