Synopsis
When a pair of monarch butterflies is searching for the perfect sanctuary to spend the winter, they know they’re on the right track when they arrive at the entrance to Pacific Grove, California—Butterfly Town, U.S.A. But where, exactly, in Pacific Grove, should they settle? That is the basic premise of a delightful picture book, Welcome to Pacific Grove, just released by PG Books.
Our heroes are brother-and-sister butterflies, Mari and Posa. Follow their journey as they flutter about Pacific Grove, exploring the town’s many landmarks: Asilomar, Point Pinos Lighthouse, the golf course, the Museum of Natural History, and many more. There’s even a dream sequence in which Mari and Posa travel back in time to meet the Native Americans, the residents of the Chinese fishing village, and the Methodists who created our rich history. Without giving away the ending, we will reveal that thanks to the children in the annual Butterfly Parade, Mari and Posa finally find their perfect winter sanctuary.
Welcome to Pacific Grove is actually two books, one a full-color picture book and the other a black-and-white coloring book. The whimsical illustrations were created by local artist Keith Larson, while the text was written by Joyce Krieg, also the author of the local walking tour book, Pacific Grove at Your Feet.
Although designed primarily for children, Welcome to Pacific Grove has plenty to entertain, uplift, and enlighten adult readers. Each place visited by Mari and Posa includes a Fun Fact, and the books contain detailed information about monarch butterflies, including specific things readers can do to help preserve and protect these very special visitors.
Welcome to Pacific Grove is the ideal gift for children or grandchildren, as well as a perfect souvenir for visitors and desirable addition to the bookshelves of local residents.
