This book provides a source of operating principles and useful data to the user of electric arc welding equipment. Emphasis is places on principles of operation and not specific details of commercial equipment operation. If you are looking for operating details of specific pieces of welding equipment, this book is not for you. It is divided into two parts. The first part discusses basic theory. The second part discusses practical applications of the fundamentals of electricity necessary for understanding the operation of arc welding systems. Rules of thumb are used where possible. A few rules of electrical engineering are bent, but not broken. In the second part, emphasis is placed of Tig and Mig (non-consumable and consumable electrode) welding systems. Some elementary knowledge of physics and electricity, as taught in high school or as taught in a vocational school, is helpful. Chapters 2 thru 5 of Part I, were added to make the Handbook complete. The material in these chapters is more detailed and complex than required for an understanding of Part II. They may be omitted by the less technically inclined reader. Chapters 12 and 13 on MIG welding power supplies are a bit more theoretical than the other chapters in this book. A special effort has been made to explain the operation of MIG welding systems.
