Welfare

A collection of essays by different authors examines welfare and welfare reform in response to questions about the system's problems and efficacy

Gr 10 Up--Two series entries to inspire knowledgeable debate on controversial subjects. The first book addresses whether welfare is necessary, whether it encourages dependency, if abuse of the system is a serious problem, and the question of reform. Entries include excerpts from speeches by elected officials and articles by journalists, economists, and former welfare recipients. In the second title, first amendment concerns battle the potential dangers of pornographic material. The Internet has opened the proverbial can of worms--who can and should regulate certain types of materials available on-line and exactly whose rights will be violated by doing so? Also debated are the possible harmful effects of pornography and how feminists respond to it. Some of the articles are supported with statistics and documentation; others are more personal. Readers are left to draw their own conclusions. Lists of organizations to contact for further information and thorough indexes are included. Students looking for research to help with their own arguments concerning these topics are sure to find material to support their views, as well as some that might perhaps change their minds.
