This excellent family health care guide, meant to be read cover-to-cover, draws on expanded and updated articles from the Wellness Letter--a newsletter begun in 1984 under the auspices of the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley. Within five broad divisions--longevity, nutrition (especially well done), exercise, self-care, and environment and safety--information for making intelligent choices for a better, healthier life is presented in authoritative, easy-to-understand language. Illustrations and highlighted, boxed texts and charts are particularly praiseworthy. The detailed index gives access to both conventional and controversial topics: from choosing shoes to bottled water. With its preventive medicine and public health point of view, this complements similar sources such as the Mayo Clinic Family Health Book ( LJ 12/90). Highly recommended.
