The Welsh Revival: Its Origin and Development

The Welsh Revival: Its Origin And Development by Thomas Phillips presents a composite history of a dramatic religious awakening in Wales during the 19th century. The work collects Preface, Introduction, and a broad array of letters, testimonies, and narratives to trace how revival began in Cardiganshire and then spread across Wales, including north and south regions, through towns, slate quarries, and ironworks. Centered on prayer and united action among diverse denominations—Calvinistic Methodists, Independents, Baptists, and Wesleyans—the account emphasizes the transformative effects on individuals and communities: conversions, renewed family worship, temperance improvements, church growth, and unprecedented Christian unity. While celebrating the spiritual zeal and social renewal, the author carefully notes cautions about excesses and the need for sustained pastoral care to nurture new believers. The volume also includes appendices with postscript and ministerial letters, illustrating the revival's reach, the role of lay leadership, and the ongoing desire to see God’s work extended beyond Wales. The work stands as a historical record and reflection on a major religious movement.
