The Welsh Wars Of Edward I: A Contribution To Mediaeval Military History, Based On Original Documents

Armies grinding through rain-swept passes, stone castles rising above subdued valleys, a king determined to bind a land in iron. The Welsh Wars of Edward I is a landmark study of the english conquest of Wales and the hard-fought campaigns that created medieval England and Wales as we know them. These wars reshaped two nations. Drawing on original documents, John Edward Morris reconstructs the strategy, logistics and brutal realities of the Edward I Welsh campaigns, from field operations and sieges to the vast programme of castle warfare in Wales that anchored Plantagenet rule in the late thirteenth century Wales. Clear, precise and vivid, this classic of medieval military history remains an essential military history reference: a rigorous academic reference work that is also compelling reading for medieval history students, military history enthusiasts, and general readers curious about how empires are built on the ground. It illuminates not only the making of medieval England and Wales, but also the methods later carried north in the wars of Scottish independence, placing Edward I among the most formidable Plantagenet kings of England.
