Aber erst Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts begann die "Aerologie", die systematische Erforschung der h�heren Bereiche der Atmosph�re. Die Meteorologen jener Zeit erkannten, dass die bis dahin �blichen Bodenstationen mit den "englischen H�tten" oder auch h�her gelegene Bergstationen keine zuverl�ssigen Daten f�r die Entwicklung des Wetters, also f�r eine Vorhersage, liefern konnten. Um den Luftdruck, die Temperatur und die Feuchte in der oberen Atmosph�re messen zu k�nnen, wurden Drachen konstruiert, die als Transportmittel f�r die neu entwickelten Messger�te bei t�glichen Aufstiegen dienen konnten. Zahlreiche Observatorien in aller Welt setzten die Drachen ein, Expeditionen in bis dahin unerforschte Gebiete lieferten neue Erkenntnisse �ber das Wettergeschehen. Die Geschichte dieser bis in die 1930er Jahre verbesserten Drachen und Geschichten von der Arbeit mit den Drachen sind hier zu lesen. �ber 170 historische Abbildungen zeigen die Drachen, ihre Konstrukteure, die Drachenstationen der Observatorien und liefern Momentaufnahmen von den Expeditionen.
