Item description from seller

The second edition of this very scarce guide from a talented geographer, in which the author instructs the reader on the scientific observations they should make when abroad. The second edition of this very scarce work, which was first published in 1841.In this work, mineralogist and geographer Julian R. Jackson - a colonel in the British army - discusses the scientific endeavours that may be undertaken by traveller's abroad. He provides a section on 'how to map a country', discusses analysis of mineral water, collecting information about earthquakes, and modes of collecting and preserving plant, animal and mineral samples, alongside a great many other topics. With six pages of advertisements at the start of the work. Lacking the preliminary advertisement that should appear prior to the title page. Rebound in quarter morocco, with marbled paper covered boards and endpapers renewed. Externally, exceptionally smart, with a touch of rubbing to spine head. One contents leaf detached and loosely inserted. Otherwise, firmly bound. Light handling mark and spotting to the title page, with pages otherwise generally clean and bright. Very Good.
