When the power goes out on a Tuesday afternoon in October, Scott Morand is standing in his kitchen with a frozen chicken and a plan for dinner. It is a novel about ordinary people doing the unglamorous, relentless work of keeping each other alive: rationing canned soup, digging a well by hand, teaching a teenage girl to close a wound, and planting beans in frozen ground because the alternative is giving up.
