Taken from Chapter 10: How whales communicate Humpback whales, which hunt and feed in groups, use sound to help catch the fish. One or two whales lead the pod. One whale sings a feeding song, which frightens fish that the pod is hunting into a tight group. The entire pod lunges through the water, scooping up mouthfuls of food as shown below. After whales have hunted together a number of times, each member of the pod performs its specific task each time the group hunts.
