What Every Woman Should Know: Staying Healthy After 40

A reassuring and reader-friendly guide offers advice on maintaining physical health through middle age and menopause, addressing such related concerns as hormone replacement therapy, cancer, pregnancy, and sexuality. National ad/promo.

The physiological transformations of growing older are elucidated clearly in this comprehensive, up-to-date maintenance manual for women over 40. Lila Nachtigall is a gynecologist and reproductive endocrinologist at New York University School of Medicine; Robert Nachtigall is chief of the division of reproductive endocrinology at the California-Pacific Medical Center. With medical journalist Heilman, they draw on the latest medical research for this instructive volume that follows an accessible, although sometimes sclerotic Q&A format. Specific chapters address such issues as birth control, giving birth and menopause; breasts, ovaries, sex; weight control and appearance. The authors strongly support hormone replacement therapy (except in cases of clear contraindication) for reducing the effects of aging and estrogen deprivation. Nutrition, exercise and lifestyle recommendations are offered along with healthful approaches for reducing risk of such common diseases as breast and colon cancer, for maintaining one's sex drive and having a baby in midlife.

With a professional writer's help, Lila and Robert Nachtigall create an easy-to-use, thorough guide to the most common health concerns of women 40 and older. The Nachtigalls generally focus on healthy, vibrant living as they provide discrete information on perimenopause; menopause; healthy heart maintenance; breast self-examination and breast concerns including benign cystic breast disease; sex and sexually transmitted diseases; birth control; midlife pregnancy; reproductive organ problems; urinary tract infections; incontinence; and colon tract cancer and its prevention. Throughout, boxes list resources ranging from the National STD Hotline and the American Fertility Society to the Endometriosis Association and the American Academy of Dermatology; present as bulleted "fast facts" information on subjects including ovarian and endometrial cancer, hysterectomy, AIDS, hypertension and the female heart, and symptoms for such complaints as cystitis; and counsel on such things as correct use of condoms. A good addition for general collections. Whitney Scott
