What better way to find out what works in team science and outreach than to ask those who are living and breathing it? This book captures peer-to-peer learning experiences that can be disseminated to a wider audience. Moreover, What Works in Team Science and Outreach is intended to inform and guide those who are tasked with building and leading interdisciplinary teams. Rather than approach team dynamics as challenges to be addressed, we present them as a phenomenon filled with curious mysteries and miracles that should be embraced and explored. It is no easy task to get stakeholders from various disciplines to come together, stay open to ideas, and then make decisions in productive ways that make team members feel involved in something much bigger their individual contributions. Through this collection, we aim to explore, celebrate, and add value to the team science community of research through disseminating positive science team experiences.

We hope that these stories will resonate with you in some cases, reaffirm what you already do in others, and nudge you to try new approaches in your teams come Monday morning.

John Cabra is an Associate Professor at the State University of New York, Buffalo State’s International Center for Studies in Creativity where, as part of a team, he focuses on teaching, assessing, and researching the science of creativity.

John specializes in facilitating and accelerating scientific and interdisciplinary innovation as part of his work through Knowinnovation. John has written journal articles, book chapters, and books in the areas of business, technology, engineering, and creativity. In 2017, he co-authored the book Organizational Creativity: A Practical Guide for Innovators and Entrepreneurs.

Julia Figliotti is a Creative Specialist and Facilitator at Knowinnovation, an international facilitation company with a focus on scientific innovation. With a Bachelor of Arts in Writing and a Master of Science in Creativity from SUNY Buffalo State, she specializes in academic writing and storytelling. Julia has published web articles, journal articles, books, and chapters on education and creativity.
