When The Earth Took Its First Breath

When Earth Took Its First Breath is a lyrical bilingual picture book that invites children and families into the wonder of creation. With side-by-side stanzas in English and Spanish, the story imagines the Earth’s very first heartbeat, breath, and blossoming into life. Through vivid poetic imagery, readers are guided to see the Earth as a living being, one that breathes, loves, and connects with all life.

Written by Latina/Indigenous author and educator Melissa Nevarez, this book bridges cultures and generations with its gentle storytelling. Perfect for children ages 4–8, it makes an ideal read-aloud for bedtime, Earth Day celebrations, classroom lessons on nature or Aztec mythology, or family libraries. Its soothing rhythm and universal message of care for our planet resonate across borders.

When Earth Took Its First Breath is more than a story it is a mythic lullaby, a love letter to Earth, and an invitation for young readers to dream of a kinder, greener world.
