When I Feel Surprised (First Feelings Series)

How are you feeling today? Children experience all kinds of feelings in a single day, but they can't always name them or talk about them easily.

Developed in conjunction with a child psychologist, these board books focus on the six main emotions experienced by very young children. Featuring non-gendered characters and avoiding stereotypical associations of color and emotion, each book introduces the child to the feelings raised by one emotion. Coping strategies are discussed where necessary. Written with both neurodivergent and neurotypical readers in mind. This series of books can be used to develop emotional intelligence from a young age, as the emotions are labelled and relatable experiences are used to help young children make connections between their emotions and what might trigger them

Paula Bowles grew up in a house full of animals, and spent much of her time drawing and making comics with her brother. Having discovered she could actually do drawing as a job, she studied illustration at Falmouth College of Arts, graduating in 2005. She now lives and works as a freelance illustrator in Bristol, UK. Paula has illustrated books for publishers like Bloomsbury, The National Trust and Random House. She loves drawing cute, funny characters and writing her own stories too. When she's not illustrating or writing, she likes swing dancing, cycling and playing the piano.
