Synopsis:

Discusses why some young people are brats, bullies, or otherwise hurtful to others and how to cope with them, help them, and develop good friendships.

Reviews: Grade 5-8-- A useful, practical, and very readable guide on interpersonal relationships and understanding--in essence, how to be a friend to yourself and others. A student-inspired follow-up to her When Grownups Drive You Crazy (Macmillan, 1988), the book explores the whens and whys of kids aggravating others, the behavioral effects of peer pressure, and special problems such as physical and emotional disabilities or illnesses and outside influences. LeShan advocates and promotes a realistic understanding of both self and others, awareness of personal faults yet striving for the best, and learning to appreciate others as individuals. She relates her personal struggles; fictionalizations throughout illustrate specific points. Readers are given the tools for gaining insights into themselves and others. Sexual matters are discussed; solid, no-nonsense advice and an advocacy of sex education are presented. LeShan has a wonderful warmth in her writing that will strike an almost immediate chord with readers. Her deep understanding of the human spirit readies her audience for consideration and acceptance of the advice she proposes. A good title for booktalking and discussion, one that may need referral or display, but once in the right hands, will need only word of mouth to continue circulation. --Celia A.
