When Sex was Safe and Motor Racing Danderous

Whether TT motorcycling on the treacherous Isle of Man circuit, Formula 1 Motor racing or off-road driving on rough African courses, the South African Paddy Driver was at the top of his field and spent 43 years driving and competing in the most difficult and challenging world motor racing events. This is his often humourous account of those years in which the camaraderie of the life he and his fellow competitors led played a major role in their successes. Constantly moving from one competition venue to the next in a variety of countries and continents, they lived in makeshift caravans and mobile homes which they towed with them and shared with their competition vehicles. At the pinnacle of this fast-moving and dangerous existence, with more than his fair share of lucky escapes, Paddy shares his friendships with some of the most notable names in racing history such as Jackie Stewart, Mike Hailward, and John Surtees. He explores the fun and exhilaration, the risks and casualties, the achievements, failures and successes of competing in such a hard-hitting world.

Richard Buchholz started his professional career as a chartered accountant, went into banking, and now consults to banks. His writing started in his university days as editor of his Residence magazine which normally meant writing most of the articles. Nevertheless, a love of writing persisted throughout his professional career, which he fulfilled by writing numerous articles and technical publications. When the chance came to write When Sex Was Safe and Motor Racing Dangerous for family friend Paddy Driver, he jumped at it, even though it meant long hours after work. He is already busy on his next book. Appropriately, he lives in Kyalami in South Africa with his ever-patient wife, Annemarie, and son Michael. His daughter, Sarah, is studying architecture in the USA.
