About the Author

Rev. Kathy Berry received a Masters of Religious Edu-cation from Southern Seminary in Louisville, KY, and a Masters in Patient Counseling and postgraduate certifi-cate in aging studies from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va. For the last 16 years she has served as a chaplain in a variety of long-term care and hospice settings, and she has served as a trainer for the Alzheimer s Association. In 2009 she began working as the chaplain for memory care at Westmin-ster Canterbury Richmond. In that role, she provides spiritual care for the 120 residents with dementia diag-noses, their families and the staff who care for them. From 2003 to 2014 she taught Spirituality and Aging in Virginia Commonwealth University s Graduate School of Allied Health Professions Patient Counseling and Gerontology departments. For the last five years she has offered the When Words Fail seminar she created for clergy and lay leaders throughout Virginia, and she has spoken about spirituality and dementia at regional and national conventions.
