Since that time, he has been fighting for the legal rights of Christians like himself, rights such as homeschools for children and the freedom to meet for Bible studies. Among Farris' cases are a 1986 unanimous victory before the Supreme Court which prohibited a vocational program from discriminating against ministerial students, the "Nebraska 7" case where seven fathers were jailed for sending their children to church school, and the Tennessee textbook case where children were expelled from public school for refusing to use readers that were humanistic. Some of these cases have been profiled on 60 Minutes and other national news programs.
Farris has served as the General Counsel to Concerned Women for America, and the President of the Bill of Rights Legal Foundation. He is currently serving as the President of the Home School Legal Defense Association which he founded in 1983. This organization provides legal assistance to the more than 24,000 home schooling families across the United States.
Michael Farris' conviction that Christians should know be able to stand up for their legal rights led him to write Where Do I Draw the Line and Home Schooling and the Law and Constitutional Law for Christian Students.
The father of six daughters, his book How a Man Prepares His Daughters for Life helps a father equip his daughter to be both strong and tender, as well as teaching dads how to listen well and speak sensitively..
Michael and Vicki Farris and their eight children make their home in Virginia.
