The rare 1859 first edition, first issue of this classic by a prolific author. The 170-page text, with all edges gilt, is complete and in good, clean condition, apart from an ink stain along the edge of the bottom blank margin of the last few leaves and rear paste-down end paper (not affecting the text). The front free end paper and the rear free end paper are missing but both inner hinges have been neatly strengthened. No inscriptions. The original red cloth hardback binding with gilt title and cards on the front panel and gilt title on the spine, is tight, with some wear, fading and staining.
