About this Item
Comprehensive guide for turn-of-the-nineteenth-century cooks, with recipes, menus, instructions for hosting state or personal dinners, hospitality at the White House, & more! Orig. published in 1887, this is the 1915 edition (a 1916 printing), the first by publisher Saalfield, which contains portraits of all the First Ladies up to that time, with the current one--Helen Axson Wilson--gracing the frontispiece. Other full-page photos of women in turn-of-the-century kitchens & clothing doing things like basting turkeys, etc, appear throughout the 619 page. A fascinating piece of Americana & culinary history! Condition is POOR: both boards are completely detached, with glue residue along front one at spine. Very fragile. Heavy edgewear, soiling, fraying, etc. Text block is secure, all pages intact except frontispiece. Pages moderately tanned, particularly around edges, but generally very supple & unmarked; light dampstaining to top edges of some. An unattractive, but complete, window in the women of upper-class Washington, & housewifery in general, a century ago. Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same Day Shipping on all orders received Weekdays by 2 pm (Pacific Time); later orders, Weekends, & holidays ship very next business day.
