As in his Whitewater Rafting in Eastern America (1982), Armstead describes 150 possible trips from half-day to multi-day duration and of varying difficulties for this increasingly popular sport. He gives a brief description of the river attractions, distance, class of rapids, type of craft available, season, licensed outfitters, and suitability for beginners and disabled. Introductory sections cover the relatively brief history of river rafting (about 20 years), preparation, and expectations. About half the book consists of trip descriptions arranged by state and province, including Alaska. The other half provides addresses of outfitters, plus commercial lodging and camping. Aimed at families and novice and experienced rafters, this is the most complete directory available and should be of great value for any library collecting outdoor recreation materials. Maps and photos not seen.
