Who the Hell Is He

Detective Maya Lin thought she had seen every brand of sociopath New York City could drag through an intake cell, but nothing in the NYPD patrol guide prepared her for Luke Morningside. Lounging in bespoke silk, nursing centuries-old scotch from a dead mobster’s private cellar, and casually claiming to be the Lord of the Pit, he treats active crime scenes like cocktail parties and arrests like mild social inconveniences. Maya pegs him immediately as a trust-fund narcissist with high-end delusions and an internet connection. But when Fifth Avenue’s traffic gridlock snaps into an impossible, synchronized mandala and a string of routine mob murders yields corpses with calcified bones and glowing azure ash, Maya is forced to confront a reality that defies municipal forensics: Manhattan’s criminal underworld isn't just corrupt—it is conducting ancient, necrotic blood rites beneath the streets. And the exasperating, impeccably tailored entity in her holding tank might be the only consultant capable of reading the handwriting on the wall.
Forced into an uneasy partnership under a ridiculous municipal retainer agreement, Maya finds herself dragged into a shadow war where high finance meets predatory sorcery. Real estate mogul Dan Callahan is quietly assembling a metaphysical conduit across the island, siphoning the collective anxiety and dread of eight million citizens through subway lines, pre-war bakeries, and luxury high-rises to power a dark ascension. To complicate matters, Maya’s protocol-obsessed ex-fiancé, FBI Special Agent Michael Andrews, is hovering with federal submachine guns and bureaucratic subpoenas, determined to file Luke under national security threats and drag Maya into suburban safety. From rooftop snipers unexpectedly disarmed by party poppers to subway tunnels humming with celestial frost and demonic shadow swarms detonating into celebratory confetti, Maya and her impossible partner must wage an unhinged, high-stakes campaign to keep the city from falling into the abyss.
Yet as the conspiracy escalates toward a catastrophic ritual atop a seventy-two-story Midtown tower, the most dangerous element in the five boroughs isn't Callahan' blood magic—it is the electric, desk-rattling attraction igniting between the mortal detective and the First Fallen. Luke has spent millennia masking an ancient, suffocating loneliness behind theatrical arrogance, while Maya has used procedural cynicism as armor against the world. But when the bullets fly and the city goes dark, Luke realizes he is willing to tear up the laws of heaven and earth—and set his own bespoke loafers ablaze—to keep Maya breathing. In a metropolis where greed is an ancient curse and salvation tastes like black coffee and street-corner carnitas, the Detective and the Devil must decide whether their chaotic alliance will save Manhattan or burn their carefully guarded worlds to the ground.
