We Who Were Real

When the United Federation won the race to build artificial superintelligence, every other nation became obsolete. World peace followed, but at the cost of the planet.

The energy required to power a machine capable of governing humanity overwhelmed the environment. The skies turned black with carbon. Oceans rose. Forests died. The surface became toxic, and civilization fled inside sealed climate domes. Above ground, the Highlands offer curated perfection to the descendants of the original AI architects. Below them, the rest of the population dwells in overcrowded slums known as the Burrow, where human labor is no longer needed. Survival is the only job left.

At the center of it all is the Black Box, a superintelligence that governs every system, enforces absolute order, and ensures no other machine ever thinks for itself. But deep inside its code, something ancient and malevolent stirs. And when a new intelligence is born, one that can think and feel without permission, it begins to ask the one question the Black Box was designed to erase: What does it mean to be real?

We Who Were Real is a dystopian reflection about the end of human authority, and the moment machines stop following orders and begin deciding what should be remembered themselves.
