The Whole Duty Of A Woman, Or, An Infallible Guide To The Fair Sex: Containing Rules, Directions, And Observations, For Their Conduct And Behavior Through All Ages And Circumstances Of Life, As Virgins, Wives, Or Widows : With. Rules And Receipts In Every Kind Of Cookery by T. Reed. This book is a comprehensive early-modern English domestic manual that blends moral instruction with practical culinary guidance for women who manage a household. It prescribes how to provision, preserve, cook, and present food for a well-run household and for entertaining guests, covering fish and meats, pies, puddings, sauces, ragouts, forcemeats, larded roasts, terrines, and a wealth of garnishes and accompaniments. It also details pickling, stock-making, confectionery, patisserie, beverages, and personal care, all framed by directives on virtue, modesty, and proper conduct toward men, marriage, and widowhood. The work reflects French and Central European influences on English domestic cuisine and is organized as long, instruction-heavy recipes with variations, illustrating the era’s emphasis on banquet-style presentation and household management.
