After all, who is a member of Eastport's premier social establishment -- the Eastport Country Club -- and who isn't? Worrying that he is falling behind his friend, Jack panics, acts out, and generally muddles things up. To make matters worse, he also finds himself starting to wonder if he is falling in love with her at the same time.

With her third novel, Mame Farrell further establishes her reputation for convincing and funny contemporary fiction.

Grade 5-8-Mame Farrell's book (Farrar, 2001) about two friends, artist Jack and tomboy Chris (Christy), is dramatically read by actor Scott Shina. The summer before high school, Jack notices that Chris, his friend since first grade, is growing up, becoming beautiful, and receiving lots of attention. This compounds the worries that he already has, including his parents' marital problems, and whether the "beautiful people" at his family's country club will accept him. While this story about changing friendships and social pressures is not new, it is appealing and well written. Shina provides an acceptable reading, though at times his use of a different voice for Chris is disappointing. Public and school libraries looking to increase their middle school audiobook collections will find this an adequate purchase.
