Nehring, a high school teacher for many years, has written a book about a typical day in a suburban high school. The book combines fine description, giving the essence of teenage life in the Eighties, and thoughtful observation. The evocative scenes of school corridors are so true you can nearly smell them. In the opening chapter, the effects of Walkmans (radios) on the student population is observed. A teacher's meeting is held to discuss the Walkman problem, and different teacher personalities emerge, pointing out the frailties that they, like other professionals, possess. Anyone who has taught will be right at home. Those not so familiar with public schools will be shocked and even chilled by some scenes. No real answers, but an A-1 effort by a heroic teacher/author.
