Why You Ignore the Odds and Trust the Story Instead. This item is unavailable. Why You Ignore the Odds and Trust the Story Instead

Learn why your brain ignores the odds and how to make better decisions with statistical thinking.

You hear a single dramatic story about a rare event. You ignore the 99.9 percent probability that it will not happen to you. You make a decision based on emotion, not evidence. This is Base Rate Neglect, one of the most persistent and dangerous cognitive biases in human judgment.

In Book 10 of The Cognitive Bias Codex series, E. J. Kilner isolates the psychological mechanism that makes people override general statistical information in favor of specific narratives. Whether you are a professional evaluating risk, an investor analyzing markets, or a patient interpreting medical screening results, this bias silently distorts your perception of reality.

This volume explains why stories feel more convincing than numbers, how the representativeness heuristic overrides frequency information, and why even experts routinely commit the prosecutor’s fallacy. You will learn the difference between base rates and individuating information, and discover why natural frequencies are more accessible than abstract probabilities.

The book provides practical, structured methods for integrating statistical thinking into everyday decisions without becoming overly analytical. You will learn the Bayesian correction in plain language, apply a four question checklist to any probabilistic judgment, and build a statistical reflex that flags situations where intuition suppresses the odds.

Base Rate Neglect is not a flaw in thinking. It is a structural feature of the human mind. This book gives you the tools to recognize when the bias is operating and to correct for it before the error compounds.

Each volume in The Cognitive Bias Codex series functions independently. No prior statistical knowledge required.
