Why I Matter

In a world shaped by absence, borrowed spaces, and unspoken truths, WHY I MATTER follows Kagiso Mogorosi - a gifted young writer from the dusty township streets of Jouberton to the ancestral soil of Mankgonoe - as he uncovers the hidden history of his family and himself. When a sudden family crisis forces him home, buried secrets begin to surface: a missing father tied to one of the North West's most powerful families, a mother whose forgotten poetry mirrors his own gift, and a grandmother whose quiet sacrifices held generations together.

Rich with Setswana culture, emotional honesty, and lyrical prose, this coming-of-age novel explores identity, masculinity, memory, belonging, and the inheritance of pain and brilliance. At once intimate and expansive, WHY I MATTER is a deeply South African story about what it means to carry a name, reclaim a voice, and discover that worth is not earned through achievement alone - it is rooted in the people who loved you before the world knew your name.
