Based on his past experience with Russian Intelligence agencies the claim that the Russians would assist Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton does not add up. Russia and the former USSR have never supported republican candidates throughout history and would not change this strategy for the last POTUS 2016 election. Dating back to Lyndon Johnson and George McGovern in the 1960's and the early 1970's USSR supported and contributed monies always to the Democratic candidates and those who supported socialism. George McGovern in received support from the USA Communist Workers party, SDS and Weatherman Underground in particular. Richard Nixon was not the preferred candidate and the former USSR used to resources to attempt to defeat Richard Nixon and get George McGovern elected instead. Russians backed Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton in their campaigns over Republican rivals.
